A heartbreaking reality: communities must stay vigilant to help prevent mass shootings

It’s a cycle we’ve grown all too used to in today’s society. News breaks of another devastating active shooter incident, and instantly, our collective sense of security and peace is completely shaken, and these horrific acts of violence command national attention and discussion.

In the wake of these tragedies, we spend the following days and weeks grappling with what happened, what went wrong, and how we can prevent this from happening again. Regardless of exactly where we stand on the issues, for a brief period, safety is at the top of everyone’s mind.

But if we have learned anything from these terrible tragedies, it’s that we can’t afford for safety to be at top of mind only temporarily, and become lackadaisical to potential threats. We must remain vigilant every single day, and we must all take collective responsibility for our community’s safety. The lives of our friends, colleagues, neighbors, and children depend on it.

One of the keys to remaining vigilant is to recognize and report any behavior that seems inappropriate, abnormal or concerning. We must be aware of our surroundings: not only in a physical sense, in public locations (such as schools, shopping malls, places of business, etc.) but also on social media.

Another critical step is to be proactive in planning and preparing before tragedy strikes. Audit your environment, and prepare your people by evaluating your safety and security measures, and practicing how you would escape and survive. Every second matters in an emergency situation, and recent events have shown us that we have no time to waste.
